Take Your Christmas Decorating to the Next Level

Are you short on space for your tree?
If you're short on space or you want to tuck your tree into a corner to keep it from coming too far into your room, carefully cut off the back branches of your tree. If using an imitation tree, fold the back branches up – it’s called a “half tree”.

What about your fireplace mantle?
Decorate your mantle with greenery, then add ribbons and ornaments to match or accent your wall art and decor rather than using the classic Christmas red and green colors for an understated yet festive look. White, gold and silver can make a great statement. If you have a large mantle, layer pine, spruce, and juniper for a fuller garland and add birch twigs or silver-sprayed pinecones to add sparkle.

Don’t have a fireplace?
I
nstead of putting candles in your lanterns, fill them with string lights (purchase timer or remote controlled mini-lights so you can regulate when they go on and off to save on battery usage). This is also a great idea to make a non-working fireplace feel cozy.

What about your dining table?
Attach holly leaves to napkin rings. Add an appropriate-sized garland accented simply with holly with the red berries as a runner and you've got a super easy, but festive table. place cut sprigs of pine or holly in skinny-necked, water-filled bottles and top with tapered candles for a stunning and simple arrangement (if your table seats 8 or more, you might do up 2 or 3 of these and place them so that everyone can enjoy them).Or you might also fill a square or circular 5-7” tall vase ¾ of the way up with fake or real cranberries. Add water to cover – then cut white or red stemmed flowers (i.e. roses, mini carnations) and place them one by one into the vase. If there is still some extra room, add enough cranberries to fill to the top, leaving a bit of a breathing room. If you prefer not to use flowers, consider adding floating candles instead.

Is your home up for sale during this season?
Rule 1: Declutter your space … and start with a clean slate.
De-personalizing your home (this is a good time to take down your family photos and replace with artwork or if appropriate, a mirror or two to reflect your tree lights. Whether you’re using a real or imitation tree, use small white lights for illumination (they will highlight the natural items you are using).
Look for decorations that complement your home’s dominant colours for an elegant and beautiful look that doesn’t clash with your home décor but adds to it.
That said, if your colors are bold, accent with more neutral colors (you might consider going “winter” rather than “Christmas” and use natural or winter white or silver snowflakes and clear glass together with your white mini-lights.
Eliminate anything fake, faux or plastic and choose a few beautiful items that nature gives you for free.
